Key Batter Metrics

On the batter side, the metrics that matter for betting are different from the ones that matter for fantasy baseball or casual fandom. Batting average tells you how often a player gets a hit; it does not tell you how productive those hits are or how well calibrated the market is on his performance.

Free Data Sources

Everything I have described above is available for free. That is one of baseball’s most remarkable features for bettors — the analytical tools that professional syndicates use are built on publicly available data, and the gap between a retail bettor and a sharp is not access to information. It is the discipline to use it consistently.

The two foundational sources are FanGraphs and Baseball Reference. FanGraphs provides advanced metrics (xERA, SIERA, wOBA, hard-hit rates, plate discipline data), leaderboards, game logs, and split data that covers every active player in MLB. Baseball Reference offers the most comprehensive historical database, including career stats, head-to-head records, and detailed game logs going back decades.
